Carambola is the fruit of a deciduous tree in the Oxalidaceae family, the species Averrhoa carambola. It is also known as Starfruit. It is native to Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. The fruit is a five-pointed star in cross-section, which is why it got its name. The skin is green to yellowish, slightly waxy and edible. The juicy flesh is yellow, transparent with one black edible seed. The fruit’s taste is fresh, juicy and refreshing and comparable to a mixture of papaya, orange and grapefruit flavors.
The fruit can be yellow or green in color, depending on the variety. The yellow fruit has a sour taste, and the green one is sweeter. It is rich in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin C and water.
Carambola is eaten fresh and is completely edible. It is also often used in salads, cakes, marmalades, jellies, cocktails or as a garnish for various dishes.
