It originates from the Andes, it was cultivated by the Incas. It grows at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level. It is also called the love fruit because it is heart-shaped. Its skin is brown-green, very thin and has patterns similar to fish scales. Under the skin is white flesh rich in vitamin C and black seeds.
An underripe fruit ripens in two to three days in a paper bag, at room temperature. Fruits that feel heavy in the hand for their size are the juiciest. It is best eaten fresh, cut in half and with a spoon, although the fruit can also be made into jelly or jam.
