Mangosteen is the fruit of an evergreen tree. Its exact origin is unknown, but it is probably from Asia. The fruit has a purple hard peel and is about the size of a small apple. It usually contains five to seven seeds each with sweet, juicy white flesh. The pulp has a pineapple or peach flavor, which is very unique and exotic, which is why mangosteen is called the “queen of fruits”.
It is a very good source of antioxidants, calcium, fiber, iron and phosphorus.
To consume mangosteen, the peel must be removed. This can be easily done by hand or with a knife. The sweet white flesh can be eaten as a fruit, but is also used in jams, syrups, juices and ice cream. The peel and seeds are not edible.
