Papaya is also called a tropical melon, because its taste resembles a melon. It is grown mostly in South America, India and South Africa. The papaya tree is similar to a palm tree, and the fruits can weigh up to ten kilograms. The skin of a ripe fruit is yellow or orange, with brown spots. Unripe fruits are cooked as a vegetable. Ripe papaya contains more vitamins.
When preparing for eating, the papaya should be cut lengthwise into two halves, the seeds should be removed with a spoon, like with a melon, and the skin should be peeled. This fruit is ideal for making salads, but it is also delicious when served sliced and topped with lemon juice.
